Know More About Teeth Whitening

girl with teeth whitening shade identifier: text: know more about teeth whitening Who wants a brighter smile? Of course, we all do! But how can we make our teeth whiter? We better know more about teeth whitening.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Brushing and flossing are our main and everyday ways to keep our teeth whiter, brighter, and healthier. But we sometimes see and think that it is not enough. We still feel that our teeth lack shine and are more yellowish than before.

No one wants to feel conscious because of their not-so-white or bright teeth. Moreover, whiter teeth can give you much more confidence and make you feel and look younger.

Teeth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products usually contain one of two tooth bleaches: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These bleaches break the stain into smaller pieces making the yellowish color less concentrated and giving you a brighter smile.

What Causes Our Teeth to Change its Color?

Many factors are causing our teeth to look dull, not so bright, and yellowish in color.

Food and Drinks

Coffee and tea are the number one reason our teeth change their color. Red wine can cause teeth discoloration too. The intense color pigment attaches to the white outer layer of our teeth, causing discoloration.

Excessive Tobacco Use

Chemicals like tar and nicotine found in tobacco create stubborn stains in our teeth. Tar is naturally dark, and nicotine turns yellowish and stains the teeth’ surface when mixed with oxygen.

Medication

Some medications can cause tooth darkening. It can be a side effect of some antihistamines, antipsychotics, or some high blood pressure medications. Chemotherapy treatment and head and neck radiation can also cause tooth darkening.

Mouth Injury

A mouth injury can also cause tooth discoloration. An injury can lay down more dentin, which is the darker layer of our tooth.

As We Age

With frequent brushing as we age, the outer enamel layer of our tooth gets thinner. This makes the yellowish layer called dentin show through.
