What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

It causes an overwhelming and often unpleasant urge to move your legs while you’re resting or trying to sleep. There is no known cure for the syndrome, although some types of medication may relieve symptoms.

Restless legs syndrome or RLS is a condition that affects many Americans. In fact, research shows that RLS affects approximately 10 percent of US adults. Even though RLS is common, it is often misdiagnosed as insomnia or another neurological, muscular, or orthopedic condition. According to a study of families in the US and Uk, around 2 percent of children have RLS.

Could Massage with Oil Help Treat Restless Leg Syndrome?

A study shows that there could be relief at hand for the one in ten Americans who suffer from RLS. According to the survey’s findings, massaging legs with oil has been proven to provide benefits for the condition, which have recently been reported in Complementary Therapies in Medicine.

During the study, scientists looked at ways to assess the short-term effects of massaging legs with olive oil. And whether doing this helped reduce the severity of symptoms of RLS. They decided to set up a double-blind placebo-controlled trial that involved 60 people with RLS. Several people got massages with olive oil twice a week. And the placebo group was given a liquid paraffin-based massage twice a week. They record the severity of people’s symptoms at the start of the study and a week after the final treatment. Scientist used the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group rating scale.

The decline in total RLS severity was more significant in the group who received massage with the olive oil group. It is more significant than the placebo group given liquid paraffin massage. The researchers concluded that the short-term application of massage with oil could effectively reduce the symptoms of RLS. Although there are calls for more research to back up the findings.
