Interview with Brilliant Massage & Skin Founder

How did you get into the industry?

I was always passionate about wellness, but I did not plan to be the founder of Brilliant Massage & Skin. I was passionate about fitness, and then I got into massage school, thinking it would be a part-time gig. But once I saw the demand, I decided to make it my full-time business endeavor, and I have to say it has been a great decision. I have a great life-work balance, and it is a rewarding industry to be in—always helping people!

What’s New in the Business or in the Franchise Model?

When I brought on my first hire, my goal was always to create an employee-centric work environment because, firsthand, I knew it was not an easy job to service customers all day, especially when the services demanded physical endurance. That’s why I created a business and franchise model that allows our employees to not get burned out and deliver the highest quality services. That allows us to make more money at the end of the day because of the way we are structured. We have extremely high satisfaction ratings from our customers. That separates us from some other spa brands that don’t always get the best satisfaction ratings from customers, and struggle with high employee turnover rates.

Where do you See Opportunities or Challenges for the Franchise/Business Moving Forward?

I see a great opportunity for our brand to become a household name because of the way we are structured and the systems we have developed over the years in our corporate locations to ensure quality and seamless operation. The challenge right now is that we are a fairly new franchise brand, and we have to make a name for ourselves out there to gain the trust of potential business operators. We welcome everyone to come to our corporate locations and see for yourself how we were able to operate successfully on a daily basis.

What is your Goal for the Business Moving Forward?

I would like to see Brilliant Massage and Skin in all 50 US states and beyond.

Talk to us About Training and Support, How Do You Deliver?

As of 2024, I, the founder, and myself personally will be able to train, coach, and support our founding franchisees. Something you cannot get in brands that have been around for a long time: one-on-one support with the founder is an unmatched opportunity to capture and have a successful business for yourself.

Your most difficult moment in the Franchise Business?

My struggle right now is the desire to give everyone an opportunity to own Brilliant Massage and Skin, but at the same time have strong quality control—carefully selecting who we can truly work with and ensuring that they will be a great addition to our brand as an owner of Brilliant Massage & Skin location(s).

Define your Franchise Model:

A. Training and Support Model?

We have 56 hours of training at minimum provided to the new franchisee, plus additional training will be provided on an ongoing basis and as needed for successful operations. Client interaction support, opening the store, maintenance, duties, procedures, and role descriptions will be covered during the initial stages of opening a location.

B. What is the Fee Structure?

Franchise Fee: $35,000

Royalties: 6% gross sales

Local Advertising: You will be required to spend 6% of gross sales

1% Corporate Advertising of gross sales

C. Territory Definition?

We would like to see our locations open in areas that have an all-year-round resident population of a minimum of 50,000 or areas that receive 1 million or more tourists a year if they have fewer annual resident population numbers than 50k. Each franchisee will be awarded exclusive territory in their chosen area.

D. Day in the life of a Franchisee?

Imagine yourself waking up in the morning. You get a sip of water, stretch for a bit, and get up. Then you check messages from your virtual receptionist; if you are needed to assist with anything in the office—nothing major—it looks like the day will go smoothly. You check the messages from your other staff. Perhaps some supplies are running low. You go ahead and order online some more paper towels and skin care products. Then you head down to the office to see if everything is clean and neat, and if there is enough clean laundry, you swap a load to wash and dry. It looks like it’s time for lunch, but on your way there, you meet a client of your Brilliant spa, and they tell you how much they love their monthly massages. You thank them and wish them a brilliant day! You check the ConnectTeam app, and you notice that one of your staff members requested to take a day off next month. You check the MyTime Scheduler app and decide that that is something you can approve. You let the receptionist know to block that day off for them and allow the time-off request. Now it looks like it’s time for a chat with your Facebook ads manager. He would like to update you on the new promotion results. Afternoon rolls in, it’s time for a workout, and you head down to the gym. After that, you check your messages one more time before you start preparing dinner and relax for the night. This is the day of the life of a brilliant massage and skin franchisee.

What Does Your Franchisee Do in the Business Every Day?

Daily duties include overall business quality control. cleanliness control, staff management, virtual receptionist management, supply ordering, ad manager management, customer relations, issue and conflict resolution, and reputation management. Attendance at local networking events and fundraisers.

Who is the Ideal Franchise Candidate?

Our ideal franchisee is someone passionate about wellness and people. Most ideally, someone who had direct experience as a Massage Therapist, Esthetician or Cosmetologist, or someone who worked in the wellness field in other capacities. Or someone who owned another small business prior. Someone who has an entrepreneurial spirit and wants to serve and help people. Someone who has good communication skills and a positive attitude. Someone who believes in wealth building and has an abundance mindset.

Success Stories and Failures with Franchisees?

Hopefully, success stories will only come in; that’s our goal: to make our franchisees successful. We have some interested prospects, however, locations have not been opened yet. The failure I see so far is that some people are afraid to go for their dreams; later sometimes means never. If you can do it now, make a devotion today; it won’t get easier tomorrow. Please check in with us soon for success stories!

What Goals Do You Have for the Franchise Model in the Future?

I love the franchise model because it’s a win-win model for people who want to own their own business and for people who have spent a lot of time and already developed systems and processes and would like to share those lessons learned with others to make it easier for new owners. Why learn from scratch and your own mistakes when there is already a road paved for success by someone who has done it before? It would be wasteful not to utilize or share that information and save a lot of time and headaches for someone starting a business in the same industry.
